Day 30 of 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes!
Today’s word is “refine” – five minutes on the timer… and go!
An interesting word, refine. It can bring back memories of a Victorian society where people were “refined” and seeking to “refine” (said with a slightly nasal eastern tone) their lives.
It can also bring to mind a fire. Remember that 90’s praise song?? Refiner’s Fire?? Yep. Lots of campfires have that song down in infamy.
To me, though, it brings to mind the idea of combing. Refining my work and combing through it for extra words and taking the words already there to state even more eloquently their purpose.
This is the job of the writer. Refine their writing, but even more so, their soul. It’s also true what they say about writing and blood and how you just spill it on the page with each word… so when I’m writing, is my soul truly worth the read??
Is my soul as refined as the words I’m attempting to string together? Hmm. That gives one pause.
As this perfectionist sits here, there is no way I could wait until my soul or writing for that matter is perfect before I write again. It would never happen.
I write while I become refined and the process makes the almost-refined writing shine. That’s the beauty in it.
…and time’s up.
Amazing what comes out when you put fingers to keys with no prior thought. 🙂
